Decorating a Birthday cake?

For my friends 17th birthday I was asked to make a cake. I am a very good baker, but when it comes to decorating cakes I could be a lot better. And I was wondering if anyone can recommend any websites/books that give instructions for how to decorate a cake? Also where can I buy cooking supplies such as cake pans, etc. ?
