Does anyone have any tips for decorating the Williams Sonoma Santa Mold Cake?
Here's a link to the product, in case you're not familiar with it:
http://www.williams-sonoma.com/products/sku9523838/index.cfm?pkey=cbkwspti
I've watched the video on that link and got some ideas, but I was wondering if there are any cake makers/decorators that have any additional tips for me.
Are you going to be decorating it with Fondant or BC or something else?....
Fondant would give you the smooth frosting look, verses the Buttercream...unless you let it crust and then try to smooth it out VERY carefully.....which In my opinion would be hard to do....otherwise you can do the "star tip" decorating...were you basically frost the cake using the star tip, you just color him with "stars" from the star tip...kinda hard to explain...that would be an easy alternative to Fondant or trying to smooth out the BC...
Not sure how familiar you are with cake decorating.....or should i say...more with trying to get RED frosting....its a pain the behind.... ;-|
So if you are not familiar with coloring frosting red...I would color it brown first and then try to color it red...
and as for the black...since there isn't TOO much black frosting that will be needed I would suggest just buying the Wilton pre-made stuff(if you are using Buttercream)....otherwise, i found a trick that has always worked for me....to get black color the frosting green, and then add the black coloring....works 95% of the time...
In the photo the Santa looks kinda glittery....are you going for the same look?....If so I suggest getting the cake sparkles or (if using Fondant) finding a glittery Luster Dust color to paint onto the Fondant.
Hopefully you aren't going to travel with this cake...This would be a nervous wreck for me...I would be concerned it would tip over...
If you are looking for more tips or got questions...I would suggest checking out cakecentral.com
Its a great site that is full of cake decorators that are willing to answer questions...you have to sign up to ask questions in the forums and see members photos...BUT its free and only takes a bit...
