how long does it take for mold and mildew to form in a wet cast?

So i have a cast on my ankle i've had it for about 4 weeks. i accidentally got it wet this evening and its already stinking horribly. im afraid of mold growing in it. should i go to the er and have it cut off or wait to go to my doctor?

Mold isn't an issue. But depending what type of cast you have, it may lose its effectiveness or you could get an infection.

Fiberglass casts/splints will not lose their integrity when wet. Moisture, however, is trapped against the skin. This can lead to skin maceration (skin softening) which in turn can lead to infection.

Plaster casts/splints will lose their integrity when wet. Once plaster loses its integrity it offers little to no protection for your fracture. Moisture is trapped against the skin. This can lead to skin maceration which in turn could lead to infection.

What to do if your cast/splint gets wet: If your fiberglass cast/splint gets damp, (not soaked), you can take a hair dryer, set on cool setting, and blow through your cast. Then, blow down the top and bottom of your cast. This is usually effective because the fiberglass cast is porous.

If your plaster or fiberglass cast/splint is soaked, make sure to call as soon as possible so the doctor can schedule a cast/splint-check/change.
